BRIDLES
Although bridles come in standard sizes, each make vary slightly in their measurements. The size of the horse does not always relate to the size of his head, however as a general guide we suggest the following, but you may have to mix and match to get a good fit.

BITS
All horses' mouths and tongues vary in size and shape, the bit must be the correct size and type for your horse.
MEASURING
Mouthpieces are measured in inches or centimetres, depending upon the manufacturer. Straighten the bit and measure from the inside of the loose ting or cheekpiece to the inside of the other.
FITTING
Bits should be adjusted so as to wrinkle the corners of the mouth only a little. There should be no more than ¼ " (5mm) play on either side.
SADDLES
The main purpose of a saddle is to distribute the rider's weight as evenly and comfortably as possible over the horses' back. The size and width of the tree determines the size and width of the saddle. The tree must fit the horse.
MEASURING
For the size, measure from the pommel to the cantle. Standard sizes are from 15" to 18" (38cm - 45.7cms). Saddles with cut back heads are measured from the metal stud at the side of the pommel to the centre of the cantle. For the width take a template using a metal coathanger or similar material, mould it over the withers 7cm (3") back from the shoulder, where the arch of the saddle should rest. Standard widths are narrow, medium, wide and extra wide.
TIPS ON SADDLE FITTING
Placed on the horse's back, there must be a clear passage down the gullet. No weight should be taken on the horse's spine as the rider's weight will reduce the amount of clearance over the withers and spine.
There should be around a 10cm (4") clearance between the pommel and the withers, without the rider.
The saddle should be level this avoids the rider being tipped forwards or backwards.
The full surface area of the panels should be in contact with the horse's back to distribute the rider's weight over the largest possible area.
The length of the saddle should suit the horse's back so that there is no weight on the loins.
The knee roll, panels and saddle flaps should not protrude over the shoulder, as they may restrict the horse's freedom of movement.

FOOTWEAR
For long riding boots all measurements should be taken in the sitting position.
CALF: Measure around the widest part of calf, over breeches and socks.
HEIGHT: Measure from the floor up to the 'knuckle' on the outside of the knee. Be generous as boots drop with use.

RUGS
Measure your horse, the fit is very important. Too tight creates constant discomfort which could result in runs or sores. Too large lets in draughts and wet.
LENGTH - measure in a straight line from the centre of the horse's chest, around the shoulder in a continuous straight line to the furthest point of the hindquarters.
DEPTH - usually standard, although some manufacturers give a choice of extra depth. Measure from the centre point of the back and straight down.
All our rugs are available in a range of sizes in 3" rises as shown in the chart below
